hey all,
I got an offer to lay out and design a newspaper. well I cant even print properly from a regular desktop printer so can someone please give me some tips for me to be careful about?

I'll probably be using indesign for the layout and ps for imagery normally.

so any preferred clor settings, pantone settings, black values whatever you know please write here.

I'll be easily handling the rest for sure.

so print tips please...:help:

1: No bleed (well duh)

2: mac 60% cyan in the black, you can ad more in some printes, but a good rule of thumbs is 60%

3: Images 254 DPI

4: Illustrator files, Deselct overprint fills in the Attributes window (now that i think about it, always deslect overprint fill)

5: Illustrator files should be saved in Version 8

6: 6.5 point text is the minimum, anything lower than that will not be readable. And 6.5 is only non-serif and bold fonts only

7: Even though you do add cyan to your black, you should never let a black graphic cover an image. Rather mask of the image on the exact same spot as the black graphic appears.

8: Be carefull with thin lines in generally.

Thats all i could think of right now

thanks buddy. I didnt really understand number 7 though.
what is a graphic, what is an image and what do you mean by covering?
Just trying to be sure :)

and what actually is cyan for in black. what would happen if I dont?

I'm counting on the experience of the journalist who called me. I'm sure he knows that I have no idea about newspaper printing.

I'll probably meet him today so I'll let you know what happened :)

I'll explain number 7 in details. One of the hardest things to explain without images, so i made one

1:
Is an ordinary picture, as you can see

2:
Is an image covered by a graphic

3:
Is what happens if you don't add cyan to your black
Even though you add cyan, it might still happen on big graphics.
With text you should be ok with even 30% cyan

4:
Is what i mean by cutting of the image at the same point the graphic starts
On this image there's some space between the two, to indicate what i mean

To add cyan to your black, just create a new colour and make it 60% cyan 0% magenta, 0% yellow and 100% black

After doing this many many many times, you'll learn that different values of different coloures changes the black colour a bit. You can work out different variations of black and get a real smooth colour when printed :)

Some things I learned while working for newspaper:

Watch you line screen...Frequency: 90 lines per inch... Angle 45 degrees...Shape diamond

Your transfer should be set: white 5-10% and black 90-95% This will eliminate whites getting blown out and blacks spreading too much. Remember you typically get a 25-30% dot gain based of 50% grey.

Images should not be too contrasty...a bit on the lighter side will work better than a darker image.

I'll send more as I think of it...it's been about 8 years
