Well in my newb point of view, I can think of 2 ways to make them. Either use shapes and transform them. Some lighter or darker than the others, to represent shadows and highlights. The other way is fill in a space with a color and use the 3D Transform filter and delete the parts that aren't part of the cube. I'm sure theres better ways, and I'm almost sure that monk will answer this one ;)

I'd do what SeventhVirgo suggested and use 3D transform, i find it the easiest and best way.
to get a true cube i'd use the custom shapes, polygon, with the point down, duplicate it and move it up 1 pixel and knock the opacity down to about 20% (so you can see through to the original one), keep doing it until you have enough layers to reach up to the top point of one side it the polygon then delete the original layer, merging the layers back together and knocking the opacity back up, then it's just adding the shading, difficult to explain without an example, hang on, i'm sure i've seen this somewhere..............ok, found it - http://www.thewebmachine.com in the photoshop section (keep doing that, going off halfway through a reply hehe)
