there is a tool it illustrator ... I cant remeber what it is called but its under that tool that you use to make transitions between shapes .... you click on an area of colour and it traces it

there is also a tool in freehand that traces the area you create a selection in

its the auto trace tool, and it sucks....i think that is the worst way i have found...actually my best results are just tracing over an image with the pen tool...it just takes way to long.

Yeah I know ... there is not going to be any tool better than tracing things by hand

tracing is kind of like cheating

if you want to convert an image to vector, tracing isn't cheating :P it's the best way. i've never bothered to work out streamline.

Depends on what you're doing, if you want a full coloured image, i would say it's better to use the tracing tool. Streamline is more for single coloured images, like logos and such.

But it's always good to have by the hand, you never know when it might come in handy

Streamline like any other app requires more in depth fiddling with the settings to get the acquired effect. I use Streamline as part of some of my design process, and without a doubt in my mind, is the best tracer out there. colour, black & white, loose, tight, works excellenty with spot colours and even totally stable in classic (when in Jag). News has it Adobe is releasing Version 5 for Mac OS X in later autumn.
