View Full Version : King Rat
So we were supposed to design a book cover...I did King Rat by China Mieville. Weird book but I like it. It just warranted a gritty urban feel with this very angry, slowly-turning-obsolete beast in it.
Enjoy. Comment if you're compelled.

It's definately different. I like it, but I think the white is way overused.
Definately an interesting image for a book cover, and I do indeed like it. I do have to agree that there is too much use of white, especially near the rat.
As for this as a book cover, where is the name of the author and the title of the book? If I saw this at a book store, I would be like, "Wow, that looks cool, but where is that King Rat book that I'm looking for?" Also, is this the front, spine and back of the book, or just the front? I feel like it is everything because the image is very right heavy, and my eye doesn't see the left half at all.
the title and author text were not included just because that takes the focus off of the image - and you're right, it is everything - a summary of the book/reviews, etc. would all go on the left half so the white there would be subdued.
/thanks.
Do you think you could post your version with the text because I think it would be interesting to see the play between the image and the text... there are definately ways to make it so that the image is the focus and the words are just background items.
Trust me when I tell you that I'm probably one of the first people to understand that very well...I'm just not going to for this image. It's got nothing to do with the typo not coinciding with the image - it's just that once I put that up it's about China Mieville's King Rat and not the picture I made.

i like the rat alot. maybe he could have had some proper big front rat teeth/fangs all yella and stuff but close enough :)
i also think the bg could haver been in-keeping with the way the rat has been done but apart from that if i saw that in the book shop i would defo pick it up!
great stuff.

its awesome. Id perfer less white on the left though. over all.. *two thumbs up*
thanks everyone.
(and the white would be subdued in a bookstore cos there'd have to be a box or something to put in the summary, just to clarify again)
