View Full Version : the silhouette effect of images...how is it done?
how do people get these silhouettes of images taken. is there a way to take a photo and duplicate results like this without having to draw it over? here are some examples of what i mean:

not really, tracing is the best option, you could try threshold (adjust until you can get a nice outside edge) then delete the bits you don't want leaving the outline but it'll be a bit rougher, would work though

you could use the pentool and do a trace around it, then fill with selection with a small feather. This should look similar, as well as giveing u smoother edges. Then just erase as monk said, parts that you want to get rid of or make smoother.
Also, set the eraser airbrush pressure down, or else if its at 100%, it just wipes the whole thing out on first run.
This should work, if not, do what monk said.
i know this thread is old but how about this:
Duplicate the layer and set the layer on top to difference mode?

^^^that might work if u play wit the bottom images color and contrast
sorry, i just assumed the images would have the figures cut out already

else just do a threshold yea, then get that selection and then do Select>Border and then take it to alpha channel, give it a slight blur and then take that selection back and fill it... else just trace it out ;) Illustrator goes maybe the quickest if you just need a sharp outline

Hi!
Hereīs a tutorial I just finished about tracing images. Enjoy!
1. Open your image (pic1)
2. Duplicate the "Ron" layer and delete background layer
3. Erase the undesired background from your image
4. Add a white layer under the "Ron" layer (pic2)
5. Select "Ron" layer and adjust Contrast to +100 (pic4)
6. If your image has very bright edges, add small stroke from Layer Styles
7. Flatten image
8. Adjust Treshold to the level which looks best (pic4)
9. Select > Color Range. Use eyedropper to pick black color and adjust fuzziness to 200
10. Go to Paths > Make Work Path From Selection
11. Save you work path by double clicking it and renaming it
12. File > Export > Paths To Illustrator. Save your *.ai file
13. Open your *.ai file in Illustrator
14. Wrap a selection around your drawing and add a small stroke width (pic5)
15. Delete all unwanted small lines in your drawing
16. Fill black areas with black and whites with white (pic6)
17. Your traced image is ready!
