View Full Version : InDesign and page numers question
Hi
Have a question on page numbering in inDesign.
I have around 30 facing pages in this document. I used auto page numbers on my Master Pages. Now, I have one single page (empty)on top of my facing pages, which screws-up my numbering, since the counting starts with that page. Where now it says page #2, it should be page #1. How do I fix this?
Thanx a lot for any help.
Select the page, right click it and select "numbering & section infos"
check "page numering start at" and type 1.
thank you,
It changes the pages in the layout menu/window, but it still shows #2 on my 1st page.
Ahhh i see, what you have to do is not putting "page 1" on the master page, but a #.
Nope, it doesn't work...
I have it on my Master Page. Left & right hand side - A.
I went to type-Insert Special Character-Aotmatic page numbering.
The problem is - that my layout starts with single page that is empty now (I don't need it), then I have a spread - facing pages layout. Document starts with the left hand page and this should say page#1 (now it's page#2). When I applied # sign on my master page it just displays # sign on all my pages.
Also is there something like "Invisibles" function - same as it's in Quark? I moving from Quark to InDesign, so I am new to this application.
How about the Style Sheets - I don't see it in InDesign.
Thanx for all your responses

If you're using InDesign CS, go to the Layout file menu, go to Numbering and Section Option. This dialogue box allow you to specify which page to start page numbering, you can also use it to specify different sections of your layout.

yeah, do it using sections. Just start a section from the page you want to be labelled 1 (which should, by convention, be the right page of a spread) and have that numbered.
This is kind of an old question, but in case it you haven't figured it out yet..
Are you just trying to remove the autopage numbers from one page? You have to goto that page and tell it to "override master pages" or something like that. Then you simply select the number on that page and delete it, since you can't edit master elements from pages other than the master. Once you override master elements, you can safely delete it from that page.
1. Go to Pages menu -> Keep Spread Together
2. Delete page#1
3. ...->Auto Page Number

I just had this problem a little while ago. I needed to have a cover, then a blank left page, a table of contents on the facing right page, and then page #1 on the left. InDesign kept changing my page #1 into a non-facing page, which messed up every page after it.
All of the other suggestions in this thread are valid, but here's what's missing: before you change the numbering options, first open the drop-down menu in the Pages palette and de-select "Allow Pages to Shuffle." With that turned off you should be able to adjust the numbering without your pages changing handedness.
