I'm working on an Adventure RPG project and, unfortunately, haven't recruited any aid yet. So, in addition to the programming, sound, storyboarding and everything in between, I also suffer the tedium of having a one-man graphics department. I know a decent bit about playing around with PSP, but I don't consider myself anything greater than intermediately skilled.

The general idea was to use construction-paper cut-outs for character sprites. (think something along the style of South Park's animation, but not nearly as cartoony) For the backgrounds, I planned to use a sort of photo-realistic look, although I'm not sure how to make them blend properly with the sprites. Overall, it may sound like an entirely horrible idea, but not the way I'm envisioning it. The problem is communicating my vision on paper.

Well, to get a general idea, here is a background I am experimenting with: JPG file - 640 x 480, 256 KB (http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/7996/dscn0213rc0.jpg)

I'm afraid I didn't do so well with this one. I applied a pastel filter, and tried to give contrast to the foreground. (the mossy stones) This is supposed to represent a two-dimensional perspective.

If someone can point me in the right direction, then I would appreciate it. Don't be afraid to criticize, either.

I think the foreground needs to differ more from the background.

perhaps you should hit up http://www.gettyimages.com and get some perspective ideas.
This link is for a professor at San Jose State University that teaches photoshop and digital photography classes. He has some helpful hints at good perspective and composition. Perhaps applying some of those things will assist in your color and focal point issues.

I also think you need to post a few examples of your sprites. That way you can have us help you blend the two together.
