enhanced brushed metal FX???????

seeking asstance with trouble shooting the solution to creating a particular graphic?

I am inspired by the brushed aluminum used in native os x applications such as safari, itunes etc.

i am creating a website where i want to create a background image that is similar yet different. i am striving towards a brushed burgundy/orange/bronze effect that is seamless....

i am torn as to if i should create an image that is say 1024x15+/- or a complete 1024x968 that will some how have to be cut up so as not to delay the page load.

then of course the is the challenge of actually creating an image that works...

thoughts or suggestions?
