View Full Version : InDesign vs. Xpress
since this is bound to come up in this forum, i figured id post it and get it out of the way:
http://www.macworld.com/2002/05/features/dtp/
that is a pretty involved article discussing whcih DTP program is better - the winner? Unsurprisingly, InDesign.

I have to say i'm still not convinced, plus Quark 6.0 is out now, and the OS X issue has been taken care of, plus the multiple undo's.
Here's some things i like to comment on.
and merge two stories by linking their text boxes.
So can Quark, since V.2 or something
InDesign lets you print a whole book to disk as a PDF file (which you can't do in XPress).
Eeehh
I did that yesterday, and the day before, and many times before
XPress 5 requires that you own the $249 Adobe Acrobat package to build PDF files
I agree thats stupid, but of course thats an Adobe advantage cause they're making both programs.
However the Xpress 6 has the save as PDF feature.
and the option of allowing images to break past the borders of their picture boxes.
Couldn't live without that :)
I'm not the one to sit here, and decide wich is better that the other.
The InDesign vs. Quark issue, is going to be as ignorant as
The Dreamweaver vs. Go-Live issue or
The Mac vs. PC issue for that matter
Anyways, thanks for sharing the link Shecky, there was alot of stuff i actually didn't know, about InDesign
I cant rememebr who told me this but...doesnt Quark has some issues with EPS's? I know InDesign works fine with it but doesnt quark have some quirks :snake: on that?

Exporting EPS from Quark is out of the question, unless you're gonna open the file in PS.
Importing eps into Quark is no problem, works fine, however, printing Illustrator 10 files will sometimes fuck up, so you gotta save as 9 or less.
Thats the only thing i've experienced
hmmm ok thax for that
I have always been advised to save AI files as version 8 for compatibility reasons.
ok let me get this straight...exporting an EPS from quark is ok if im goonna open it in PS but if I open it in illustrator it will mess up right? but what if i were to open it in indesign? I dnt have Quark thats why im asking. Just curious. Thx
isnt there some patch for this issue? is there a known reason as to why exporting an EPS from quark messes up?

Quark EPS doesn't embed the fonts, so when you open on a computer that doesn't have that font, it will automaticly replace the font with something else.
i don't know about InDesign though?
