Would someone be able to remove the white background from the image below while keeping the shadow effect?

use the magic wand to select the black areas, copy into a new transparent image, add a drop shadow in layer styles.
if the white is on a seperate layer in PS:
you could just lower the Fill opacity in the layer styles dialog box and youre done :)
i hope i understood the question properly...i didnt mess up my last exam coz i didnt know the answers :teehee:

I use a filter called Mac's Remove White. I got it off of Dubtastic's (http://www.dubtastic.com) site. Just put it in your filter's folder and when you want to remove the white in a picture....go to filter>MAc's and it automatically does it for you. Here's the download link (http://www.dubtastic.com/res/RemoveWhite.zip)

Since it's straight black and white, there's a slick little trick that I just recently picked up ... CTRL + ALT + ~ will load the luminosity of the image. After that, just create a new layer, inverse the selection, and then fill it with black. You'll have an exact copy of the image, but with a transparent background. I used to do it by pasting a copy of the image as a new channel, and then loading the channel as a selection until I learned the "load luminosity as selection" bit. Hope it's as handy to you as it's been to me!
Colorbean,
Outstanding tip. I took for a test drive around the block and it worked like a charm.... 2 seconds to pain free selections.
Thanks!

in 0,1 sec. : set layer-blend-mode to multiply, but you got to use a background (whatever you want) in the .psd to see the effect.
i would just trace it with the pen tool and copy and paste to a new transparent document
