...when creating large gradients in PS, It seems to always end up looking a bit rough, and not super smooth like I really would like it to be, say like in a nice 3d render with a nice lighting setup...

" im running windows in 32 bit, and not 16 bit"

anyone have the same problem, or at solution :-)

Does it look "rough" while open in PS as a PSD or when you save in some other bitmap format?

If you see this once you save, let me know what the format is.

Also, a screenshot will always help :)

Also, make sure you have unchecked the "dither" check box

Check your view>proof setup>... options and your image>mode>****/channels settings.

There's just so many possibilities. A screenshot always helps :)

That looks like the effect you get from using Lightening effects, not gradients.

Other than turning dither off and making sure you're running on 32bit and have your proof settings right, I know of no other way.

Things like this are really highlighted when your monitor contrast is very high. It could be that as well but I can't be too sure.

You view>proof setup> should be windows RGB

ah wait..did you ever mess with your cache settings?
Your cache settings are at:
Edit>Preferences>Memory & Image cache.

Cache levels should be 4 and the check box below that should not be checked

i don't think you can do anything about this... i think it has to do with your graphics card

over at my dad's house, he got a new card a while back, a geforce, and the gradients are nice and smooth. but back at home, we have a stock card, and they look like... that

iŽve got a "Gforce 3. 128 mb" and a samsung 19" dynaFlat screen :-) and i use all the "right" settings... guess youŽll have render it in max or other 3d program, if you wanna get the "pro" gradient look like in the "popup" here at

this product (http://www.samsung.de/ifa/index.asp)

psd is the best output file for keeping them smooth, it's an unfortunate ps glitch, it responds better to different colours, reds, blues and greys show it the most, you can save your gradient as a compressed file, open it, and gaussian blur it to reduce the lines, it gets rid of most of it but you'll always have that problem not only wiwth gradients but very large airtbrushes and flares too
