Hey I was wondering how to create "techy" backrounds, such as the one attached. Any help is greatly appreciated. -Robert

At a glance, the yellow looks like a 3d render from 3ds max, and the fainter parts look like lots of rectangles, and possibly a stock photo of a factory or other industrial building. Just blended together with varying blend modes and opacity.

a few of my friends make images like that and they use cinema 4d to do it

Well hehe this is an easy one......anyone can do it really...well lol

Anyways like r0yksopp has already said just a blend of stuff...well that basically sums it up really.

All it is, are lots n lots of things bunched together which look alright together and not odd lol

Just mess about with a few things like boxes + lines and text 'trend whore' style. Look at at the pictures and study them.......once you do this you will find that they are quite easy to make.......they don't have to include 3d techy stuff or even pictures can just be full adn purely PS if you want.. Pictures etc. are added to give that extra nice touch :)

Give it a try and show me what you come up with.....and I'm sure with a little practice you will master it hehe :)

Would building schematics work?

yup, they'd be good....or just lots of PS-created blocks. Complex circuit diagrams would work as well.

Complex enough for ya?

How about that?

Anyway the building schematics thing is probably from watching "Aliens" too much in a day.

TCI explained it correct.. that's the easiest way doing it.. :D

now seriously.. the 'techy' pattern is simple usage of the marquee tool and setting the blending mode to 'soft light' or just decreasing from the layer opacity..

as for that yellow shape.. it can be done easily with a 3d program but it is possible making it on ps.. all you need is some patience.. :)
it is mainly brush work.. highlighting and shadows.. some blurring and that's basicly it..

This is very cool info. Thanks everyone. Stoopid question: what is "trend whore?"

well trend whore is basically all the little extra stuff that make the iomages look good..if you look at the image at the top the small boxes + the circles is known as trend whore

you can have typography also where you place text into images etc. thats just small enuff not to be able to read it all basically gives that extra touch to the image.

I would use the greeble plugin for 3dmax and then take a screenshot of it applied to a plane and the scatter it in photoshop by dublicating, bluring and scattering.

heres what I got...
