Shift function

Ok in Photoshop whenever we hold shift will allow, us to have a straight line, especially the Polygonal, and the gradient tool, but how come when I press shift, they do a 45 degree increments, is it possible to fixed or disable this function

Shift is basically used to keep you on a straight path through your document which in turn is every 45 degrees as for changing this I do not believe it is possible.
