Question: Grouping to a grouped item

Is it possible to group an item to a grouped item? I know that technically you can work your way around and get the same type thing, but is there a quick way to just hit like ctrl + g and get it to group an object to another grouped one?

Im aware of two methods of "grouping"

One is linking:
Lets say you want to link the two layers x and y, i would select either x or y and then click on the link box of the other layer.
When i say link box, i mean the one next to the eye icon which indicates if a layer is visible.


Second:
Just create a new foldder via the mini icons at the bottom of your layer palette and then drop the relevant layers in that folder and if you select the folder and move it, all its contents move as well.

Sorry, I think I might have presented my question wrong...

Lets say I have 3 circles, each on their own layer. From the bottom up it would be Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3. Would I be able to group Layer 2 to Layer 1, and then group Layer 3 to Layer 2 (which is already grouped to Layer 1)?

ok....you could still apply my second suggestion.


Have a folder, and drag Layer 1 and Layer 2 into it.

Now select Layer 3 by clicking on it once, and link it to Layer 2.

Now if you select the folder and move that about, you move Layer 1 and Layer 2 but if you select Layer 2 and move that, Layer 3 moves along with it.

If it doesnt make sense, let me know and ill post an picture of it.

That makes sense, but I'm still not sure if thats what i need...

As you can see, Layer 2 is masked into Layer 1. Is it possible for Layer 3 to be masked into Layer 2?

ah I see....well not by grouping not that im aware of anyway.
You could always use a layer mask on that but i guess youre looking for somehting along the lines of the group function.

A layer mask lets you hide a portion of an image...so lets say you ctrl+clicked on Layer 1 and then select Layer 2 and while the selection is still active just hit the layer mask button do the same for Layer 3


Maybe if you could say what you want to achieve, we might understand exactly what method would be best or if it is even possible

Ok well I basically want to have it as if Layer 2 was grouped to Layer 1, and Layer 3 grouped to Layer 2 (something like a double group). I want to group them because if I add an inner glow or something, it keeps the glow on the new object that is getting put in there, you know? And I want to have Layer 3 go into Layer 2 and still have the inner glow over it, that is, if Layer 2 had an inner glow. Hope you understand.

ah i think i understand you.

Im not sure if it can be done.

I would put those layers in a folder and make my own inner glows (using marquee's, feathers and strokes) and have them at the top of the layer....or maybe create my own action that does this for every layer i choose.

Of course this sort of thing depends on what the effect you want is.
